500 Words: The Writing Desk of My Dreams
At the desk of my dreams, it is always easy to find your place and settle in because it is bright and open. Muted sunlight streams in through windows like a still morning pond, and at the desk I am under the surface staring back up at it in thought.
I pivot when I think (to let my eyes lose the sights and take in your sound, trust me I am listening!), so the chair must pivot, and it would behoove the desk to wrap around me to accommodate this motion and a wide range of Stuff. Central to all this Stuff is a Screen (which could be two, or three, preferably mounted) and that connects to my Devices which further connect out to their own peripherals. This of course implies a hierarchy of placement and wiring, which in constructing my Dream Desk I will have mastered and tastefully hidden from sight. The whole structure must live in and out of space as it is needed and urgently not needed – it is best if everything pivots. The monitors definitely must be mounted to pivot out of sight when they are too many or too distracting.
But when everything is needed, and everything comes together, this Desk will be a glorious monster. It will serve up Surface as much as it serves up Information, and the cleanliness of the hierarchy will provide so much Access to the Devices that the production level of content is guaranteed to skyrocket. My seat and my Screen will ensconce me in an amplifying focus vector, where I can deploy my many skills in rapid succession with zero downtime between them. And if downtime is needed, well then, I am sure to be able to crush whatever video game I want with ease.
I envision this desk as the root of a great tree, which rises in an emerald clearing. Baby blue skies offer a hushed breeze that runs through my hair, but never pushes it into my face. I am stretching and taking a deep, whole body breath to get ready to write the best thing you’ve ever seen. My gaming chair is a racer’s red and black, the industrious chic I try to bring back to this sacred fen. I am typing on a skinny little laptop and writing big fat thoughts in the coolest wrapped text you’ve ever seen rendered in ASCII. I am what happens when WordPressure makes diamonds and blogs are web logs again.
My desk will likely be a vintage find with many wooden drawers, and I will take pride in drilling holes for the wires and evening out the little uneven bits that make it shake and creak. I will probably have to buy some new tools for the latter. And I will have to make sure I have extra space for new Devices. But if I can pivot and focus, I am sure that I’ll write something amazing there. Can I really build this Deku Desk? Can I write it into existence?
